If officials of the Archdiocese of New York thought that their thinly veiled threat to close Catholic schools if teachers succeeded in getting a token raise would silence the teachers and their supporters...well, those officials couldn't be more wrong.

In early May, Catholic school teachers in the New York archdiocese took part in one-day strikes at 16 different schools and are planning to continue to participate in these "rolling strikes" throughout the month, according to the teachers' union.

After nearly 20 negotiation sessions spanning over a year, the Federation of Catholic Teachers has decided to strike. We have decided to strike because representatives of the Association of Catholic Schools threatened that if teachers receive wage increases, they would have to close schools. This statement violates the teachers’ rights and we are striking over their violation of the law. This matter has been reported throughout the media and charges have been filed with the appropriate agencies.
